Terry signs 5-year contract with Chelsea FC

Chelsea captain, John Terry, signed a 5-year contract with Chelsea FC. John Terry, who had 2 years left on his Chelsea contract, is now bound to Chelsea until 2012. John Terry was very happy that he was staying with the club.

Terry told the club’s website: ‘I’m really happy this has now been concluded.

‘There has been a lot of speculation but these things take time and I never had any doubts that I wanted to stay at Chelsea and that the club wanted me to stay.

Terry has always been a strong player for Chelsea when he arrived there in 1998 under the captainship of Marcel Desailly. He scored the game winner against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League. He was voted best defender in the UEFA Champions Leauge tournament. Terry was a key component in leading Chelsea to consecutive English Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006.He has also proved himself with the English national side.  Terry scored the first international goal at the new Wembly Stadium against Brazil. Terry is currently the captain for England after David Beckham stepped down. Terry was the only player from the English national side to be on the 2006 World Cup’s all-star squad.

Terry and Michael Owen are the main faces for the Umbro sports line. Terry is also involved in a sponsorship deal with the football gaming series Pro Evolution Soccer. He also appears in adverts for Samsung and Nationwide.

DC United and Monarcas Morelia draw 1-1

DC United drew with Mexican team, Monarcas Morelia 1-1 in their opening game of the SuperLiga tournament.

The inaugural SuperLiga involves four Major League Soccer teams and four from the Mexican first division.

Christian Gomez scored for United in the 7th minute, with a stunning free kick outside the box, to put United in an early lead. Luis Landin recieved a red card for shoving United player Bobby Boswell while going for the ball in the middle of the field. Despite playing a man down, Morelia struck gold with a beautiful shot by Martinez off a cross from Adrian Aldrete. United’s next game in the SuperLiga will be against Club America, while Monarcas Morelia’s next game will be against current MLS champions, Houston Dynamo.

Henry scores goal in first game

Thierry Henry, the former striker for Arsenal, scored in his debut for Barcelona leading them to a win 1 - 0 win over Dundee United. Thierry Henry came in as a substitute for the international star, Samuel Eto’o, at halftime. Henry was awarded a penalty kick in the final minutes of the game. He took the penalty kick and missed, but was able to get his own rebound and put it in the net for the win.

A minute from the end at Tannadice Stadium, the Spanish side was awarded a penalty kick when Terrors defender Darren Dods pulled down Giovanni dos Santos. Henry’s penalty kick was stopped by goalkeeper Grzegorz Szamotulski, but Henry put in the rebound.
